Doctors who diagnosed him in mid-January this year at Max Hospital in Delhi said here today that this form of tumour, seminoma, commonly occurs in germ cells found in reproductive organs of men and women. In Yuvraj’s case, it is located in the “superior mediastinal region”, or the upper area between his lungs, just above the heart.

On Wednesday, Yuvraj will begin the third of his nine weeks (three cycles) of chemotherapy, and has been reading Lance Armstrong’s biography, going for long walks and sometimes jogging.

Dr Nitesh Rohatgi, a senior medical oncologist at Max Hospital who accompanied Yuvraj to the US when he started his chemotherapy sessions earlier this month, said: “It is a malignant tumour called extragonadal seminoma which is very rare. It is not lung cancer, nor has the tumour spread to the lungs.”

Incidence of this tumour outside the testicles is extremely rare and reportedly “forms less than 1 per cent of cancers on the whole”. Dr Anupama Hooda, director of the Oncology Department, said there was a 95 per cent chance of cure with therapy, and chances of recurrence were minimal.

While Yuvraj’s father, former Test cricketer Yograj Singh, today lamented that his son had ignored his advice to seek treatment earlier, doctors said “he came to us at the right time”.

About the cricketer’s recovery, Dr Rohatgi said: “Yuvraj Singh the person will be cured of this cancer, and most likely Yuvraj Singh the cricketer will return with the same fervour that he had when he left.”

According to the doctors, the US team was chosen “because of their vast experience with sportsmen”, which has “seen athletes return to the field”. Yuvraj’s manager Nishant Arora said all “financial and mental support” was being provided by BCCI.

The medical team at Max Hospitals said Yuvraj had consulted them “around January 25” with a “presumptive diagnosis”, made at an undisclosed hospital. “Going through the information provided to us, I feel that a presumptive diagnosis was initially made, and a second biopsy was later undertaken (none at Max hospitals), which on special testing led to the diagnosis of seminoma,” Dr Rohatgi said.

He added that doctors in the US, who are in touch with the Max team, have confirmed this diagnosis.

Both Riteish and Genelia got married at a traditional Marathi ceremony which took place at Grand Hyatt in suburban Santacruz from 12 pm onwards.

A pre-wedding bash for Riteish and Genelia was organised by filmmaker Sajid Nadiadwala and actor Fardeen Khan in suburban Bandra on January 31, 2012.

On Thursday, there was a haldi ceremony at Riteish’s residence and Genelia had the traditional rose ceremony in which close friends and relatives pour coconut milk on the bride.

The judgements will be closely watched as it could exacerbate the government’s credibility over what has become one of the country’s biggest-ever corruption scandals and sees the former telecoms minister A Raja languish in jail pending trial.

To be pronounced by a bench comprising Justices G S Singhvi and A K Ganguly, the verdicts will come over pleas for a probe against Chidambaram and for cancellation of licences of spectrum filed on October 10 and March 17 respectively last year.

The judgement will also be seen as a sign of how stable business contracts and government regulation are in India, with any cancellation of licences expected to hinder the country’s reputation with foreign investors.

The scandal over the alleged allocation of telecoms licences at below-market prices, which could have lost the treasury up to Rs 1.76 lakh crore, according to the government’s auditor, has already impaired the Congress-led coalition government in India.

Thursday’s verdict will decide whether the any of the122 zonal licences issued in the 2008 grant process to 85 firms, including the local units of Telenor and Etisalat, that were said by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) to to be fouled up, will be cancelled.

The apex court will also rule whether a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe should be initiated against Chidambaram, a veteran of the Congress party and the most influential government official yet to be charged for complicity in the scandal.

Petitioners against the Home Minister, including political rival Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy, have said that there is evidence on record showing that the decision regarding pricing of spectrum was taken jointly by him and Raja.

Earlier, In a big blow to the UPA government, the Supreme Court on Tuesday had said that an administration response against prosecuting a government servant or minister should come within four months, failing which a case against the official can be carried forward.

The Supreme Court also accepted Janata Party president Swamy’s petition against the Prime Minister’s Office in the 2G spectrum allocation scam case, even though judges avoided directly criticising Premier Manmohan Singh.
